Latest movie review: Halloween

Directed by Rob Zombie
Starring Malcolm McDowell, Sheri Moon Zombie, Tyler Mane, Daeg Faerch
Dimension Films (2007)

Rating:

Finally, my long-awaited review of Rob Zombie's Halloween! I'm sure you've all been dying to hear what I thought of this film. I mean, I've must have received a gazillion emails since it was released and, well, just haven't gotten around to it yet, until now...

Zombie promised the film would be fresh, new and different from the other Halloween films. Loaded with gore. He commented about wanting to "bring back the scare factor." He did.

First, let me say that white-trash folk are sufficiently represented in this film, as we've come to expect from Rob Zombie. We've got William Forsyth briefly escaping recognition as Ronny White, the the dirt-bag dad, abusive husband during the early portion of the movie which leads us through Michael Meyers' childhood. What a bastard, but Forsyth does an outstanding job, as usual, and we're not sad to see this character meet his demise at the hands of the young Michael Meyers

Sheri Moon Zombie plays the strong wife, putting up with the lazy loser's rage at home, and dancing in a strip club at night to keep food on the table for Michael, his older sister, and little sister "Boo."

Casting is excellent on this project. Zombie picks well from among his choice talent, familiar faces seen in his two previous movies, including a quick cameo by Sid Haig, a part for Bill Moseley, and Danny Trejo.

Young Canadian actor, Daeg Faerch, delivers an excellent performance as the young Michael Meyers. Daeg was a perfect pick for this roll. He is a cute kid, but can play creepy, and makes us feel sorry for the young Michael Meyers at the same time. According to his IMDB profile he wrote a 15 page script called "Duel" and subsequently directed and starred in it. You can find a clip from that flick below this review.

Zombie cast Malcolm McDowell as Dr. Loomis, and posted this comment on his Myspace blog to announce the event, "As many of you know A Clockwork Orange is my favorite film and I am a huge, huge fan of Malcolm. I know Malcolm will kick ass as Dr. Loomis. He is thrilled to be part of Halloween and is ready to make a new classic."

A new classic is exactly what this retelling of the Halloween story is. As usual Rob Zombie delivers the sinister stabbings, bloody shocks, and grimey gore he has become famous for. I was not dissappointed, and if you're a Zombie fan, and a fan of great horror films, check it out. I'd also suggest you keep your eyes out for more from Rob Zombie. Can't wait to see what he's got in store for us next...
